During their time at school, it is the responsibility of the school nurse to see to the care of sick children until their parents pick them up or take them to the doctor. Here are some tips for the school nurse to reference when aiding those who suffer from a variety of ailments during the school year.
Caring for Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are a common occurrence for many people, and children are no different. Children are known to pick their noses, which is the leading cause for childhood nosebleeds. The best response is to have children sit, slightly bending forward, while pinching the end of their noses until the bleeding stops.
Treating Allergies
Allergies are another annoying ailment causing the sufferer much discomfort in a number of ways, such as: dry, itchy eyes, runny nose, and itchy skin, in the form of a rash or hives and sore throat. The allergens triggering these symptoms include animal dander, insect bites, pollen, and dust. If the child is consistently around animals, then the school nurse should recommend to the parents that the child has minimal contact with said allergy instigator.
Addressing Food Allergy Issues
Food allergies can cause the reactions above, in addition to a few others including: upset stomachs, diarrhea, cramping, asthmatic symptoms of coughing and wheezing, and swelling of the mouth and throat. If the school nurse consistently sees a child for food allergy issues, then he or she should recommend to the parents that the child undergo periodic food allergy check-ups.
Final Tip for the School Nurse
The school nurse should always remember to remind parents and school administration to do what they can to reduce the allergens at home and in the school.
