Pediatrics by Dan Gold, M.D.
Children are frequently affected by episodic or continuous runny nose and nasal congestion. This can be caused by a variety of nasal issues including: viral illness, irritating environment (dry air, noxious smells), allergy, nasal foreign body or enlarged adenoid (tonsil in back of nose) growth. The majority of these conditions will resolve with supportive care (ie nasal saline and suctioning) and without therapeutic intervention. When the symptoms last for more than one week, consultation with an ENT specialist may be necessary to evaluate for more advanced nasal conditions.
