DIAGNOSTIC VISIT
The Diagnostic Visit always begins with a thorough medical history and
description of the events leading up to the main reason for being at the
Voice & Swallowing Center. The history and primary complaint determine
the types of examinations or tests to be conducted.

Acoustic Analysis
Acoustic Analysis is an analysis of the voice range and voice quality
made at the time of the initial evaluation. Acoustical analysis provides
an objective measure of severity of the voice disorder.
Aerodynamic Evaluation
Aerodynamic Evaluation is an assessment of vocal function or voice use
which determines the air pressures and air flow rates used during
various voice tasks. Excessive air pressure or air flow usually results
in improper use of the voice. Information from the aerodynamic
assessment is used in planning treatment of the voice disorder.
Trial Voice Therapy
Trial Voice Therapy is the use of specific exercises during the voice
evaluation to determine if and what type of changes the patient is
capable of making with his/her voice
Video Strobolaryngoscopy
Video Stroboscopy is a specialized diagnostic procedure in which a
stroboscopic light is used in conjunction with a laryngoscope to
electronically slow down the motion of the vocal folds in order to
identify subtle changes in vibratory patterns that are diagnostically
significant. Video Stroboscopy is used to differentiate vocal fold
nodules from vocal fold polyps and cysts. With the use of a camera and
video recording system, the examination can be viewed many times by the
examiners and patient.

Voice Handicap Inventory
A Voice Handicap Inventory is a valid and reliable self-assessment
tool for use by patients to determine their perception of the severity
of their voice. Other self-assessment instruments such as the Voice
Related Quality of Life (VRQOL) also are used for this purpose.
Voice Range Profile
A Voice Range Profile is a test of vocal function to determine the
frequency and intensity (pitch and loudness) limits of one's voice.
