Allergic Living reports the first confirmed death caused by alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) after a 47-year-old New Jersey man suffered fatal anaphylaxis four hours after eating a hamburger. Post-mortem testing revealed strong alpha-gal sensitivity and high tryptase levels. He had experienced similar symptoms after eating steak two weeks earlier but was unaware he had AGS.
Dr. Erin McGintee of our Southampton, NY office, who has diagnosed over 1,100 AGS cases, noted that his symptoms aligned with a severe alpha-gal reaction.
